Pet shop or order online for your dog?

Head to the store for advice, fit and a new puppy; online works well for your regular kibble and grooming supplies. Here's how to split it up.

For tailored advice, trying out things like a harness or grooming tools, and when you’re unsure about food, a pet store is worth the visit. For regular, trusted products you already know (like your usual kibble or standard grooming supplies), ordering online is often faster and better value.

When the physical store wins

A good pet store offers personal advice: which food suits a specific health issue, which harness fits properly, or which grooming brush suits your dog’s coat. Those kinds of choices are hard to make online without seeing or trying the product first. With a new puppy, too, where you still need to work out what works, this advice is valuable.

When ordering online makes more sense

For products you already know and simply want to reorder (your regular kibble, a standard basket, usual grooming supplies), online is often faster, with home delivery and sometimes a better-priced subscription for recurring orders like food.

A combination often works best

Many dog owners use both: the physical store for advice, fit and new purchases, and online for the regular, recurring basics. That saves time without missing out on advice when you need it.

What to look for in a pet store

  • Staff knowledge: can they answer concrete questions about food or health, or do they routinely refer you to the vet (which, incidentally, can also be a good sign for medical questions)?
  • Range: does the store carry a wide selection, or only a limited number of brands?
  • Advice without sales pressure: a good store recommends what suits your dog, not automatically the most expensive product.

Frequently asked questions

Is food from the pet store better than online? Not necessarily, what matters is the brand and quality, not the sales channel; though advice when you’re unsure is easier to get in-store.

When should I definitely go to the store for advice? With a new puppy, a health or behaviour question about food, or fitting a harness or collar.

Is online always cheaper? Often yes for regular products via subscriptions, but not always, it’s worth comparing.

Can I ask for advice in-store without buying right away? Yes, a good pet store will help you even if you’re still just looking around.
